Right Choice
I grew up on a farm in rural Kansas, and farming has always been part of my life. My grandfather was a farmer, as are my uncles, so I understand how important agriculture is to our state. I also care about farmed animals, and I believe supporting farmers and treating animals humanely can go hand in hand.
That’s why I’m concerned about the Save Our Bacon Act and efforts to include it in the farm bill. States should be allowed to create stronger animal welfare protections when their residents want them. We shouldn’t be moving backward by taking away those protections.
I think most people can agree that animals raised for food shouldn’t endure unnecessary suffering. We can support agriculture while requiring animals to be treated humanely.
I was happy to see Sen. Roger Marshall withdraw his co-sponsorship of the Senate version of the Save Our Bacon Act, and I hope he continues to stand against it. (June 25, 9A, “Roger Marshall’s right on animal welfare. Pork producers should follow him”) I also urge Sen. Jerry Moran, a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, to oppose this legislation and help keep it out of the final farm bill.
Kansas can honor its farming traditions while continuing to move animal welfare forward.
