Washington, D.C. —Today, the House voted to pass a Farm Bill (224-200) containing the EATS Act, rebranded this session as the Save Our Bacon Act. This language would undercut independent producers, override voter-approved state laws, and threaten animal welfare and food safety laws across the country. Earlier this week, the Rules Committee rejected the Luna-Costa amendment to strip the EATS Act from the bill and instead advanced a Farm Bill including this disastrous language.
The Defeat EATS Coalition condemns inclusion of this harmful language and will continue the fight against it as the Farm Bill moves to the Senate.
In response, the Defeat EATS Coalition issued the following statement:
“The passage of the House Farm Bill is an affront to farmers, animals, and consumers. The EATS language would strip states’ ability to create policies that generate important market opportunities for independent farmers, protect communities’ health and wellbeing, and set common-sense production standards that improve animal welfare.
As written, this language will squeeze even more farmers out of an already highly consolidated market and ignore the will of millions of voters across the country who want to support higher-welfare farmers. We strongly urge the Senate to remove the EATS language in its Farm Bill.”
