Washington, D.C. — Yesterday, Senators Ernst, Grassley, and Marshall introduced the Food Security and Farm Protection Act in the U.S. Senate. Other than the name, the text of this legislation is identical to the controversial Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression (EATS) Act introduced last Congress.
In response, the Defeat EATS Coalition issued the following statement:
“Promoting food security and protecting the livelihoods of America’s farmers is critical, however, further entrenching the current industrial agriculture system will not achieve either of those goals. Despite the sponsors’ attempt to conceal the unpopular EATS Act with a new bill title, the text is identical and its effect is the same: preventing states from protecting their farmers, consumers, animals, and rural communities. Passage of this bill would further disadvantage independent farmers, trample states’ rights, disregard the will of voters across the country, and keep millions of farm animals in confinement in cages and crates. As a handful of legislators continue this effort to sneak through the bill’s passage, our coalition is once again ready to Defeat the EATS Act under any name.”
